U-High vs. Parkview Jamboree

SR Christian Harris returns the kickoff for a 94 yard touchdown on the opening kick.

Tonight’s pre-season 34-7 victory for the U-High Cubs was a continuation of their dominance from last season’s historic State Championship run. From the first kick off, U-High dominated the game. Christian Harris received the kickoff on his own 6 yard line and returned it for a 94 yard TD to open the game. That set the tone of the game which became a Senior scoring night. SR WR, Doryan Harris scored on a jet sweep, SR RB Michael Hollins  scored on rushing TD, SR WR Makiya Tongue had a huge reception for a TD,  and SR QB John gordon Mckernan had two passing TDs.

SR QB John G. McKernan passed for two TDs in win over Parkview

I noted at the beginning of the off-season a few areas that SR QB John McKernan needed to address to make that next step for his career. Tonight he was a totally different QB from last season. He was throwing lasers all night. Even his receivers made mention that he was on fire.  In the second half of the game, John shocked the stadium when he scampered for a 14 yard run. Overall, John looked like he was in mid-season form and ready to lead this team back to state.

On the defensive side, the defensive line stole the night. Sr DT Donald Berniard Jr. and JR DT Jaquelin Roy were unstoppable. They were in the backfield every play and forced Parkview to play in the flats. As a defensive

line coach, I know that every ball game is either won or lost in the trenches. With the two behemoths that play inside for the Cubs, it will be really hard for any team this season run in the middle of the line.

Even though Parkview struggled tonight to find their momentum, as a whole their team has a lot of promise. They have a talented group of young men this season, but the team is not as polished just yet. JR DE Desanto Rollins stood out to me throughout the game and made a couple of big plays in the second half along with SO LB Ian Pourciau. I am really excited to see this season plays out for this young team.
