NEW ORLEANS – Tulane football went through its second-straight day of practice Friday morning at Yulman Stadium in the team’s final workout prior to spring break.
The Green Wave went through a nearly two-hour session in pads and shorts with the emphasis remaining on fundaments while also working on game-like scenarios.
“I’m very pleased with where we are right now,” said head coach Willie Fritz. “I think we’ve made great strides. Obviously, it’s a little bit hard to gauge because we’re so much further ahead than we were last spring. I’m just excited that we have some competition. There are a lot of positions that are up for grabs. You may have some guys who are starters right now, but by Week 3 of the season, it could look a lot different. We didn’t have that last year.”
Talking about returnees from last year, Fritz said a few of them have caught his eye so far through the Green Wave’s first five practices this spring.
“I like the (running) backs. They’re doing some good things. Sherman Badie and Dontrell Hilliard are veteran guys and have really embraced what we’re doing. I’ve been impressed with those guys. John Leglue is back at his natural position, playing tackle, from center. We had to play him at center (last year), just because of injuries. I expect a huge year out of him. He’s a guy that has played football for a long time and continues to keep improving. On the defensive line, Braynon Edwards has lost over 50 pounds and he’s just moving around (really well). He looks like a different guy.”
Tulane returns to the practice field on Tuesday, April 4. Practices are closed to the public. The 2017 Tulane Football Spring Game is set for Saturday, April 22 at 10 a.m.
