Bowden led the Green Wave to an undefeated regular season in 1998
NEW ORLEANS – Tommy Bowden, who led Tulane football to an undefeated regular season in 1998, is back in the Crescent City on the Uptown campus in celebration of his recognition by the Touchdown Club of New Orleans.
Head coach Willie Fritz is hosting Bowden on Friday when the former Green Wave mentor will meet current members of the football team, throw out the first pitch at the Tulane-San Diego baseball game at 6:30 p.m. at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium and enjoy a reception from 7-9 p.m. in the Jill H. and Avram A. Glazer Family Club at Yulman Stadium.
The reception is open to the public. To RSVP, send an email to ed*****@tu****.edu.
On Saturday, Bowden is set to be honored at the 2017 Touchdown Club of New Orleans Awards Banquet along with former Washington Redskins General Manager Bobby Beathard, long-time high school football coach Hank Tierney, Doug and Denise Thornton and Larry Holder of The Times Picayune and NOLA.com. Bowden, who led the Green Wave for two seasons from 1997-98, will receive the Collegiate Award for excellence in coaching after leading the Olive and Blue to its most successful season in program history.
The 1998 Tulane football team went 11-0 during the regular season and captured the Conference USA title. The Green Wave capped off the magical season with a 41-27 victory over BYU in the Liberty Bowl on New Year’s Eve under new head coach Chris Scelfo and Bowden’s assistants. Bowden left Tulane shortly after the 1998 regular season to take the head coaching job at Clemson, where he led the Tigers for 10 seasons.
