Trey’Dez Green, Kyle Parker, & Defense Leads LSU To 17-10 Victory Over South Carolina

Coming off the bye, LSU was anxious to get back on the playing field after chewing on the loss to Ole Miss as the Tigers went back home to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks.

It was not a pretty game as LSU’s offense turned the ball over three times including twice in the red zone, but a combination of the Tigers’ strong defense plus great receiving nights from Trey’Dez Green and Kyle Parker was good enough for LSU to get a 20-10 victory over South Carolina.

The 6’7 tight end from Zachary made 50/50 balls more like 80/20 balls as he constantly came down with catches whether it was high pointing the football or getting him out in open space. Green ended up getting the game ball after having 8 catches for 119 yards and a touchdown.

“I mean I knew I had to step up and make plays. Of course, Aaron Anderson is a big part in what we do in this offense so I had to step up and make those plays. I feel like my confidence coming into the game was kinda hesitant about my knee, but once I got that first catch, it was all good then.”

While Green may have been the main target, Kyle Parker did a fantastic job of complementing him as he had five catches for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Although LSU turned the ball over on multiple occasions, South Carolina made their fair share of mistakes as well turning the ball over two times as well.

The first big mistake of the game occurred when LaNorris Sellers fumbled a snap that was recovered by Patrick Payton. LSU was able to get a field goal off the Gamecocks’ mistake to give them a 3-0 lead.

It looked as if LSU was going to build on their lead, but as Ju’Juan Johnson was crossing the goal line, he fumbled and it was recovered by South Carolina. Two plays later, the Gamecocks made it a 14 point swing with a 72 yard touchdown run from Matt Fuller to put them ahead 7-3.

LSU responded with a six play 57 yard touchdown drive that was capped off by a six yard touchdown from Garrett Nussmeier to Trey’Dez Green to give the Tigers the lead at 10-7.

South Carolina would tie the game at 10 early in the third quarter, but LSU put together a 4 play, 75 yard scoring drive highlighted by a 43 yard touchdown catch and run from Kyle Parker to give them a 17-10 lead.

LSU had an opportunity to go up two scores as they were driving in the red zone, but Nussmeier threw an interception that put the Gamecocks near the one yard line. South Carolina’s defense kept the Gamecocks in the game, but in the end, Damian Ramos hit a 22 yard field goal to give the Tigers the breathing room they needed making it 20-10 with less than two minutes remaining.

Defensively, LSU corralled quarterback LaNorris Sellers all night long as he finished completing only 15 of 27 passes for 124 yards and an interception thrown to Tamarcus Cooley. Although not targeted a lot because of his ability to lockdown receivers, Mansoor Delane did come up big with a fourth down stop when it was still only a touchdown game.

“Those are real big plays. You got to make those plays. That’s why you come to LSU. I feel like I do that for my brothers, showing up. Coach put me on the island and I got to show up and make plays.”

LSU CB Mansoor Delane

Sellers, who is known to be a dynamic runner, was only held to 19 yards rushing thanks to five sacks from the Tigers defense. It was a total effort with Harold Perkins Jr., Whit Weeks, DJ Pickett, Jack Pyburn, and Bernard Gooden all getting at least a half sack tonight.

“We needed to make sure LaNorris Sellers felt us, and we had to maintain pressure against him. He is an extraordinary athlete, and we had to make sure we kept it tough out there. We also made it a physical game for him and because of that, we kept them to 10 points and that’s what we were hoping for.”

A Saturday night game in Death Valley makes a difference as well with South Carolina having 13 penalties throughout the game.

“Overall, I think our defense did a great job of just pursuing relentlessly. Guys were flying around all over the place, and we had a lot of snaps on defense overall, but you didn’t see a quit from this defense and it was a flight that can’t be taught and that’s something that we pride ourselves on.”

LSU did get the victory to move to 5-1 on the season, but the win could have been a lot more convincing. The offense did have 420 yards including 166 yards on the ground and Garrett Nussmeier did have a solid stat line completing 20 of 33 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns, but the three turnovers and the struggles in the red zone are all things that Brian Kelly is going to look at heavily over the next week.

“We ran the ball with more effectiveness and got the ball to Trey’Dez Green, which was important. However, we can’t get down on the one yard line and come up with three points. What I loved was our competitiveness and how our guys competed for four quarters as well as the fans sticking with us. We found a way to win despite some mistakes out there that could be catastrophic, and we know will have to eliminate them as the season progresses. Bottom line though, love the way the team competed today.”

LSU HC Brian Kelly

Speaking of next week, the games only get harder with an early morning road trip to Vanderbilt that is ranked 20th in the country and is 5-1 on the season.
