Tigers Draw Blood

This past weekend, Grambling State University came across the Texas Southern University “Tigers” in their annual Red River State Classic at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La. The Black and Gold Tigers boldly ravaged TSU on the grid iron by dominating the first quarter and putting up 17 points on the score board. While forcing their opponent’s to wait until the second quarter to make an impact on the game’s score sheets, Grambling State University had accumulated a total of 31 points at the half and had only allotted TSU to claim a 3 point field goal. Black and Gold Tiger quarterback, Johnathan Williams, pulled away from the game with 197 yards and 3 touchdowns to add to this season’s highlight reel. One of the most prominent plays made during the night included Williams’ 51 yard TD pass which was caught by Jr. Wide receiver, Verlan Hunter, who finished the night with 3 receptions and a total of two touchdowns. By the end of the night the Grambling State Tigers had accumulated over 400 yards, 205 of those yards were claimed through the Tigers’ ability to rush the field. One of the game’s rushing leaders was GSU’s very own, sophomore WR Martez Carter, who was responsible for 2 touchdowns, 10 carries and 61 yards. Knowing that the Tigers had no issue this week against their Southwestern Athletic Conference competitors despite having a two week gap since their last matchup, next week’s game against the University of Arkansas Golden Lions. However, considering Arkansas’ current 1-8 season and weighing in Grambling’s undefeated conference record, the Golden Lions’ chances against the Black and Gold Tigers seem a bit dull. As Grambling State travels to Pine Bluff, AR to continue the pursuit of this season’s winning trend, be sure to tune in next week to witness the Black and Gold Tigers mute the sound of a “Golden” roar.
