In a season-opening showdown at the Aflac Kickoff Game in Atlanta, the No. 24 Tennessee Volunteers rolled to an impressive 45–26 victory over the Syracuse Orange. From explosive offense to opportunistic defense, Tennessee set the tone early and never looked back.

Aguilar Shines in Debut

Quarterback Joey Aguilar, making his first start for the Vols, wasted no time making a splash—finishing with 247 passing yards and three touchdowns while completing 16-of-28 attempts. His big moments included a 73-yard touchdown pass to Braylon Staley in the second quarter and a 7-yard scoring strike to Star Thomas in the third. Aguilar capped the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown to Miles Kitselman in the fourth.

Balanced Offense Powers the Vols

Tennessee’s offensive strength was not just in the air. Running backs Star Thomas (92 yards), DeSean Bishop, and Peyton Lewis each found the end zone on the ground, contributing to a well-balanced offensive attack.

Key Plays & Defensive Momentum

The Volunteers jumped out to a quick lead thanks to a spark from special teams and defense. A 34-yard field goal set the tone, followed by Peyton Lewis’s 2-yard rushing touchdown. Tennessee extended its lead when Syracuse’s QB fumbled on a negative-yardage run; Colton Hood scooped it and ran it back 22 yards for a touchdown, sending the Vols into the locker room up 17–0.

Syracuse tried to claw back with three rushing touchdowns from Yasin Willis, but turnovers, missed chances, and Tennessee’s explosive plays kept Orange at bay.

Season Outlook

The Volunteers wrap up their opener with a convincing 45–26 win, building momentum behind a high-powered offense, sharp defense, and standout special teams. Aguilar’s debut offers a promising peek at Tennessee’s offensive potential this year.

Broader Significance & Context

  • Continuing Momentum: Coming off a successful 2024 season that included Tennessee’s first College Football Playoff appearance, this win reinforces their status as a contender under coach Josh Heupel.
  • Syracuse’s Battle: Despite flashes—especially from Willis—the Orange couldn’t overcome early miscues and Tennessee’s early dominance. Syracuse now turns focus to the season ahead as they regroup.
