Sterlington Prevails 24-18 in Tough Road Win Over Amite

In a battle of historical powerhouse programs, Amite High hosted Sterlington in Tangipahoa parish for a non-district Thursday night game.

Both offensives struggled to gain momentum due to mounting penalties. However, the Sterlington rushing attack behind star OL Mitch Hodnett would prove to be too much for the Amite defense.

Amite showed brilliant flashes of athleticism, with their QB Jeremy Franklin firing frozen ropes to ATH Brandon Coleman and two-way star WR/DB Braylon Jackson.

Amite’s defense was stingy for most of the night, only giving up three long yardage plays.

Sterlington’s offense ran a mostly veer offense with one wide receiver and limited their passes to single digits. However, they made them count. QB Dylan Downs hit WR Nathan White for a 35-yard touchdown to put Sterlington up 16-6.

Amite countered almost immediately with a 75-yard pass from Franklin to Jackson and an 85-yard TD pass to Coleman, but Amite was unable to unable to score on any of their PAT attempts.

Sterlington’s defense displayed great plays from their LB Jackson King and sophomore DB Sam Frasier.  The offensive coordinator even brought King in for a rushing score on a 2-pt conversion in the 4th quarter.

Sterlington was able to hang on and get a big late season non-district win on the road against Amite.

Sterlington moves to 8-1 (5-0 district) and travels to district rival Wossman to finish the regular season in hopes of winning their 11th district title since 2001.

Amite drops to 5-3 but remains unbeaten in district 7-3A.  They will host the Sumner Cowboys next week as they will try to seal a district championship.
