St. Thomas More gets another win, defeating Teurlings Catholic

St. Thomas More High School from Lafayette, LA took another district win Friday night against district opponent Teurlings Catholic High School.

The St. Thomas More Cougars are now 2-0 in district play and 5-0 overall after Friday night’s 42-19 win. The Teurlings Catholic Rebels fall to 0-2 in district play and 2-3 overall.

Under the cool Friday night lights, the Rebels opened with high spirits and even higher energy. However, the Cougars had different plans, keeping the lead and momentum the entire game.

Teurlings Catholic had spurts of promise, and at one point a chance to sweep St. Thomas More off of their feet early, but could not capitalize on the opportunities given.

Starting the game, the Cougars, led by junior quarterback Walker Howard, scored two quick passing touchdowns, showing the Rebels why they were ranked No. 4 in the state coming into the night.

On the other side, Teurlings Catholic struggled in the beginning on both on defense and offense, however the Rebels would find a single chance to march downfield and get a score before the end of the first.

The second quarter was a different story, with Teurlings Catholic pressuring Walker enough to force an interception and a few key stops to set the offense up for a chance to tie the game.

The Rebel offense, led by senior quarterback Kaden Boulet, would not maximize on the good positions on the gridiron, provided by the effort of the defense. St. Thomas More would later chip away at the Rebel defense and inevitably score a rushing touchdown by senior running back Tobin Thevenot to end the half, 21-6.

Coming out of the half, the Rebels would find another score by senior running back Larkin Spring, his second of the night and Kaden’s first passing touchdown. Afterward, the offense would return to become stagnant and preferring the run over the pass in critical situations.

St. Thomas More scored another rushing touchdown, this coming from the furious sprinter at wide receiver, Jack Bech. On the defensive end, the Cougars remained strong in stopping the run, not having to worry about giving up deep plays coming from the run-heavy Rebels.

St. Thomas More delivered another blow to the Rebels opening the fourth quarter with a third touchdown pass from Walker. The Rebels would attempt to find some resemblance of an offense but would not find it until the Cougars scored yet another rushing touchdown, this time coming from the quarterback spot. The final score of the game would come from Terulings Catholic but would be too late to make a comeback, sealing the win for the Cougars.

St. Thomas More looks to play district opponent Northside next week at home while Teurlings Catholic will play another district opponent away in Westgate.
