Coach Terrance Graves and a couple of student-athletes attended SWAC’s media day to represent Southern football last week. Only being Coach Graves’s second year as head coach, he was already turning heads and having major success early in his role. Last season, Southern made it all the way to the SWAC championship, but ultimately fell short to Jackson State. They also finished the season with an 8-5 record. Coach Graves mentioned the turnover issues that last year’s team suffered with in the championship game, “When you turn the ball over as much as we did, it’s hard to win any football game. But when you turn the ball over 4 times against a great team like that, you wind up losing that football game.”
Coach mentioned that one of the aspects they are working on in this off-season would be execution to get those turnover numbers reduced next season. A significant part of that is players getting accustomed to one another, as multiple seniors and transfers left after last season. The Jaguars QB room is still competing, facing position battles in practice heavily. Jalen Woods is expected to be the guy at QB as he played a big role for the team last year until his injury right before the SWAC championship last season. But a transfer in QB, Cameron McCoy, from Jackson State, might halt that plan as he is looking quite sharp in practice. Coach still did mention that it’s Wood’s job to lose, and ALL positions must compete for a starting role.
In the SWAC polls, the Jaguars were voted to win the SWAC West conference next season. Jackson State was favored to win the SWAC East. We are all itching to see if we can get last year’s SWAC championship rematch this season. In Coach Graves’ second year as head coach, could he get a championship for the Jaguar fans?
Stay tuned here as we will provide season updates on the Jaguars as the season goes along!
