Southern University defeat Jackson State University 50-31

The weather was hot, but the Southern Jaguars were even hotter as they torched the visiting Jackson State Tigers. Before a sellout crowd, the Jaguars put on quite an offensive show. It was just what the Jaguars wanted to do on their season home opener. Jackson State tried to keep pace with the Jaguars, but they did not have enough fire power to stay with the Jaguars. Southern offense lit up the scoreboard with a 50 point tally.  Not only did the Jaguars hit the half century mark with the point total, but was a super career day for Sothern’s quarterback Austin Howard. Howard was a major factor in the Jaguars’ 50-31 victory over the Jackson State Tigers in A.W. Mumford Stadium. Quarterback Howard ran for two touchdowns and passed for another one. He finished with 395 yards passing for the game. Other offensive leaders of the Jaguars included the reliable Lenard Tillery and Willie Quinn. Running back Tillery finished with 135 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carriers, while wide receiver Willie Quinn had 6 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown. The Jaguars defense bent at times, but did not break which helped propelled them to another conference win. This week the Jaguars’ defense was led by Danny Johnson who accounted for eight tackles, with five being solo. Even though this was an exciting home victory for the Jaguars, it may be short lived as they prepare for next week visit to take on the Georgia Bulldogs, the no.7 ranked team in the country. On a side note, the Jaguars quarterback Austin Howard’s high school teammate Jairus Moll led Jackson State with six receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown. All in all it was a wonderful day to be a Jaguar player, coach, and fan.
