SOUTHERN DOMINATES VA LYNCHBURG WITH 58-7 WIN

Today the Southern University Jaguars took on the VA Lynchburg Dragons as their final home game. This team was considered to be an easy victory for the Jaguars as they have yet to win a game this season. With this being said Coach Odums mentioned he wanted laser focus from his team this week and the Jaguars responded with a dominate performance.

Ladarius Skelton has performed extremely well in the last few weeks and tonight was no exception. He got the game started by stealing the momentum early in the first quarter with a 7-0 lead for the Jaguars. The Dragons continued to struggle against the swift Jaguar defense and this allowed the offense to work its magic. Shortly after the Hinton (#24) returned the ball all the way back to Lynchburg for another touchdown. The offense found is rhythm early and did not plan on stopping as they wanted to put on show for their last game in A.W. Mumford. The Dragons were unable to capitalize on their next possession so the Jaguars wasted no time taking the ball back. Skelton was able to connect with Register (#4) which is no surprise as Hunter has been a scoring leader for Jags. This resulted in another touchdown making the score 21-0 with 5:54 left in the first quarter. The Dragons were able to find themselves towards the end of the first quarter and eventually scored making the score 21-7. The Jaguars wasted no time showing that would not phase their game and scored again. The Jaguars finished off the first half of the game with two more touchdowns, one being scored with one minute left in the half. The score at half time was 41-7, Southern University.

At this point, the Jaguars were absolutely dominating the field offensively and defensively and with the support of their fans the Dragons couldn’t help but feel the pressure. The Southern University Jaguars lead the SWAC West and they performed as such despite their opponent lacking the skill, precision, and experience. This performance mirrored their execution against Ed Waters which was a high Coach Odums wanted his team to hold themselves to. The Jaguars went on to score another unanswered 17 point comprised of two touchdowns and a field goal. This is a great win to carry them into next week where they will be facing Jackson State. The Jaguars took the win against the Dragons in stride with a dominate performance as the final score was 58-7.

The Southern University Jaguars are now 4-1 in conference play and 6-4 overall in SWAC. They have proven themselves as a relentless force time and time again so despite next week’s opponent ranking number two in SWAC East an equally stellar performance is expected. The knowledge and on field experience of the coaching and players alike gives the Jaguars a great advantage over its competition. Be sure to tune in next week for another game summary of your Southern University Jaguars as they battle the Jackson State Tigers.
