Southeastern Looks for Strong Finish to Spring in Annual Spring Game

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team will conclude spring practice on Saturday with the annual Spring Game, set for 2 p.m. at Strawberry Stadium as part of Super Lion Saturday.

The game will feature the Southeastern offense and defense facing off in a 60-minute game with a running clock except for the final two minutes. The Lion offense will be decked out in green, while the defense and specialists will wear gold.

Southeastern will continue to employ its unique scoring system for the spring game. The offense will be able to score points in the traditional ways and will also receive points for first downs and big plays (rush of 12 yards or more; pass of 16 yards or more). The defense will be awarded points for touchdowns, turnovers, first downs and three-and-outs.

Southeastern head coach Ron Roberts is looking for his team to finish a productive spring on a high note.

“I want to see our team make improvements from last season,” Roberts said. “We need to focus on execution and we’re expecting to come out with a game day attitude and play at a high level.”

Roberts has liked what he’s seen from his team during the spring session.

“We feel like we’ve made a lot of progress this spring,” Roberts commented. “Our offensive guys have done an excellent job grasping our new system (under new offensive coordinator Matt Barrett). Ball security was a huge issue for us last season and we’ve done an excellent job in that area over the past several weeks.

“I think we’ve been pretty strong fundamentally and physically on both sides of the ball this spring,” Roberts added. “We’ve added some new guys into the mix on defense that have done a nice job grasping our scheme. We’re going to be technically sound on the defensive side of the ball. We’re not all the way where we need to be as a team yet, but we’re excited about the strides we’ve made thus far and where we’re headed.”

After closing spring practice on Saturday, the Lions will open fall practice in early August in preparation for the team’s Sept. 3season opener at Oklahoma State.
