Southeastern Football Practice Report – Day 11

HAMMOND, La. – Big plays on both sides of the ball highlighted the Southeastern Louisiana football team’s practice Saturday morning at Strawberry Stadium.

During the team portion in the second half of practice, the Lion offense showed off its explosiveness. Junior quarterback Chason Virgil connected with junior Devonte Williams (38 yards), freshman C.J. Turner (43 yards) and junior Juwan Petit-Frere (39 yards) on long touchdown passes.

“Finding the guys who can consistently make explosive plays is important,” Southeastern head coach Frank Scelfo said. “It takes the pressure off our offense when we have the ability to score from anywhere on the field.”

Williams scored the offense’s fourth touchdown, bulling in from a yard out to cap a methodical drive.

The Southeastern offense had another scoring chance when junior Lorenzo Nunez found senior Nih-jer Jackson for a 41-yard catch and run that set the Lions up inside the 10-yard line. However, freshman Donniel Ward-Magee made a leaping interception in the back of the end zone to end the drive.

The practice ended with a similar play. After SLU had driven the field, senior Shamar Busby hauled in an interception in the back right corner of the end zone to quell another Southeastern scoring opportunity. Senior Xavier Chatman also had an interception to highlight the defensive effort.

“Our offense has to take better care of the ball in the red zone,” Scelfo commented. “But our defense did a great job forcing turnovers in those situations to get off the field without allowing points.”

SLU will continue its camp schedule on Monday and Tuesday with 9 a.m. practices both days. On Wednesday, classes start and Southeastern will begin practicing at 3:30 p.m.during the school week. The Lions open the 2018 season with a 7 p.m. contest on Aug. 30 at ULM.
