Southeastern Football Practice Report – Day 10

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team continued working towards the 2018 season with another competitive practice Friday morning at Strawberry Stadium.

The 10th day of practice saw the Lions continue to work on game-type situations, with Friday’s workout focusing on red zone execution. SLU head coach Frank Scelfo was pleased with both sides of the ball.

“We were able to get some good red zone work in today,” Scelfo said. “During our two-minute drills, our offense and defense each won one segment, so it was pretty even competition. We’ll have some good film today to evaluate.”

Junior running back Devonte Williams was a standout on the offensive side on Friday. Williams hauled in a touchdown pass from junior Chason Virgil and also ran another in from 15 yards out during team drills.

On the defensive side, senior Zeke Walker picked off a pair of passes to pace the Lion effort. Freshman Ferlando Jordan also made a leaping interception in the back of the end zone to end another drive.

With 10 practice days in the books, Scelfo and his staff are starting to see some players beginning to solidify their roles for the upcoming season.

“We’re constantly evaluating options at every position,” Scelfo commented. “It’s not just one guy at any one position. It’s multiple guys who are separating themselves at certain spots. That’s good to see because having two or three players start rising to the occasion at a specific position allows for the competition to continue.”

SLU will return to the practice field on Saturday at 9 a.m. The Lions open the 2018 season with a 7 p.m. contest on Aug. 30 at ULM.
