SLU to Close Week Two of Fall Camp With First Scrimmage, Kickoff Appreciation

HAMMOND, La. – Three weeks before the official season opener, the Southeastern Louisiana football team will get its first taste of game action on Saturday, hosting the first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.

In conjunction with the scrimmage, Southeastern Athletics will host the second Kickoff Appreciation event for season ticket holders only from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in the Billups Room.

Fans wishing to purchase season tickets, parking passes or Billups Room passes or join the Touchdown Club will have the opportunity to do so at the event, where refreshments will also be available. For more information on the event or to purchase season tickets, fans can contact the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466.

Roberts expects the scrimmage to run approximately 100 plays with no live special teams.

“This will be a good test for us to see where we’re at as a football team through two weeks of camp,” Roberts said. “We’ll match 1’s versus 1’s, 2’s versus 2’s, 3’s versus 3’s and put them in game-type situations. This will give us an excellent chance to evaluate our student-athletes and continue the process of solidifying our rotation and depth chart.”

Roberts has seen good competition in position battles throughout his roster, most notably at quarterback where junior Donovan Isom and sophomore Lorenzo Nunez are battling for the starting spot.

“We’ve been excited about that quarterback competition and how those two guys have approached this camp,” Roberts said. “But we’re seeing stiff competition across the board and Saturday will be our first chance to evaluate a lot of these new players in a game-type atmosphere. We’re hoping to get everyone plenty of snaps and it’s a big day for us.”

The Lions are just over three weeks away from the 2017 season opener at FBS in-state foe UL Lafayette. Southeastern opens its home schedule on Sept. 9, hosting Bethune-Cookman at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.
