School Spotlight: Iowa High School (Iowa, LA)

Iowa High school has been a strong team for the last few years but this upcoming year they intend to take things to the next level.

No matter how talented a team is they are nothing without proper leadership and Coach Tommy Johns has been leading this team on the right path. Coach Johns has led the Yellowjackets to a winning record for the past 5 years including multiple playoff runs. Johns has taught his players that you need to have a certain mentality for the type of success that the team has upheld.

The biggest thing we preach to our new players is that you got to be all in. That goes for loyalty, accountability, leadership, and being invested. That’s something that’s not easy to do all the time…but in return they see the benefit of doing that all the time and the results typically take care of themselves.

This truly displays that hard working mentality that Johns has instilled in his players. And this has been displayed through the strong 2-0 start to the season that Iowa has had already landing first in their division. Winning both games in a dominant fashion having not let either of the two teams score points above double digits. But, this strong start hasn’t come easily as Iowa has a completely revamped roster from their previous 12-0 season last year.

We had 21 seniors last year so we have several sophomores, juniors, and even a few seniors that are starting for us for the first time this year. The last two weeks I’ve been pleased with their effort and their production.

With this influx of new talent in different roles the team has to make sure to stay focused on the team in front of them week by week as Coach Johns has taught them to have a 1-0 mentality throughout each week. Although this is the mentality for the team though Coach Johns has his goals set high at the ultimate accomplishment for the school.

We’ve been to the semifinals two out of the last three years and if we’re fortunate enough to get back in that situation we’ve got to figure out a way to kick that door down

Lastly, coach mentioned a few players that he felt where showing out for the team and needed a spotlight. Starting with the dual defensive ends Gaven Brown and Landon Joseph that have been bringing a constant pressure to any opposing team QB.

Alongside these two Coach Johns mentioned two-way player Kaston Lewis who plays safety on the defensive end and running back on the offensive end.

And lastly coach mentioned wide receiver Jeremiah Bushnell who is committed to Houston as an offensive standout.
