Rumble in the Jungle

Rumble in the Jungle

By Chassity Oubre

Waking up very early on a Saturday morning (much earlier than I usually would) to cover the Southern University Jaguar Football Team’s final inter-squad scrimmage game, I must admit it was certainly worth the time.  Getting to watch the players up close and personal was quite the treat.  At times on the sideline, I had the privilege to hold small conversations with some of the coaches and players on what to expect for the upcoming football season.  While both coaches and players were honest about the work that still needed to be done to be ready for the season, the eagerness and optimism for the season were contagious!  The level of play in the scrimmage combined with the enthusiasm of the fans created an atmosphere of excitement.

On Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 9:15 am at Doug Williams Stadium, the Southern University Jaguar Football team stepped off two buses to a frenzy of loyal fans and media buzz.  Cameras were snapping, loud music was blasting, and videos were rolling as the Jaguars made their mighty entrance.    After the fanfare subsided, the players were separated into position categories for warm-up drills.  After warm-up drills, it was time to fire up the practice scrimmage.  On the first play of the scrimmage, the most exciting play of the game came when quarterback Austin Howard connected with wide receiver Mike Jones on a 99 yard pass for a touchdown.  The fans went so crazy when this play exploded that I couldn’t have imagined them being any wilder if it had been a real game!  The rest of the scrimmage was dotted with more showcase plays from players such a Lenard Tillery, Willie Quinn, and Deonte Shorts.

Analyzing the scrimmage overall, the offense looks very sharp and efficient, while the defense is still a tad behind.  The Jaguar’s offensive line are quite stout in size, but are extremely quick.   Star players to watch for this season are Austin Howard (QB), Anthony Mosley (OL), Jodeci “Big Jo” Harris (OL), Mike Jones (WR), and Lanard Tillery (RB).  Definitely keep your eyes on Austin Howard (QB).  He is the real deal!

At about noon, the scrimmage came to a close.  The fans and the media had time to interact with the player and coaches before being called to the huddle for the closing prayer.  Finally, the team boarded the buses and back to the Mini Dome for more time with the fans for Southern University’s Annual Fan Day.    It was a great day and fans can anticipate another blockbuster season from their Jaguars.  At this point, the Jaguars are channeling their focus toward the September 5 season opener against Louisiana Tech University.
