Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day

On Saturday, October 4th, the LSU Tigers suffered a terrible 7 to 41 loss to the Auburn Tigers. Unfortunately for LSU fans, this game was over before it started. LSU fell to an early 17-0 deficit before Kenny Hilliard scored the only LSU touchdown to decrease the lead to 10. After drawing within 10, Auburn was able to continue executing their game plan in all 3 phases of the game.

Before we jump ship and consider this a wasted season, let’s consider a few things: Auburn and State are both unbeaten with quality wins besides LSU, Auburn was Brandon Harris’s first start, and that LSU is still a young, hungry football team. Losses like the one Saturday hurt the players’ morale most importantly. It is imperative that fans are supportive and encouraging; the players know they lost, fans can only help the program by encouraging. Early this season I wrote an article entitled “Is Competition a Bad Thing?” The basis of the article was how we as LSU fans should handle the adversity this season. Everyone knew at some point in the season that there was going to be a quarterback battle and we may struggle on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Football is the best sport in the world because it is not about how we were going to win games with all of those factors this season; this season is about finding the gems we can use for future success. Gems may be the play of the defensive backs, maybe the scheme used when Harris is in the game, but most of all that these players all make each other better because nothing is guaranteed to them. With the exception of Arkansas last season, last night may have been Anthony Jennings’ best game as a Tiger because of the support he displayed on the sidelines. LSU football will rise again; no one ever grew tall without a few growing pains.
