Northwestern State Loses To Southeastern 34-20
By: Andy Bryson
The old rivalry between Northwestern and Southeastern collided once again this season but this time in the season opener. It is a series dating back 80 years. Before the game started the series was all tied up with 29 wins each with Southeastern winning the prior three.
Two time defending #19 Southland Champions Southeastern won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball first. As soon as Southeastern received the ball, you just knew this was going to be a battle of the defenses. On Southeasters first drive, on a third and six, QB Landor was sacked and by FS Darius Poullard and Poullard also recovered a fumble by Landor. Northwestern State was able to hold Landor in check all knight by only allowing 15 yards though the air. Landor went 2 for 10 with one interception and two fumbles. So Southeastern was forced to keep the ball on the ground. Southeastern ran for 456 yards for 4 touchdowns.
Notable players form the defense was Poullard and Myers both made a sack each and Lacy made an interception. On offense Stephen Rivers made the start and went 4 for 6 with 24 yards. QB Joel Blumenthal fired up the offense when he came into the game. He completed 5 of 7 passes with 103 yards and a TD. He also ran for another 30 yards.
Northwestern looks to go on the road next week to play another in-state foe, University of Louisiana. Coach Thomas did not speculate who was going to get the start next week at QB. He did say that he is going to be working on the protection this week for his QB’s. Northwestern State is a really good football team with a defense that could upset some teams this season.
