McNeese shuts out Mississippi College

LAKE CHARLES– The McNeese State Cowboys dominated both sides of the ball last night in their 37-0 win over Mississippi College Choctaws. It was their first shut-out in three years.

The offense gained an impressive 506 yards of total offense. The offense first got started with a Derrick Milton’s four-yard touchdown run. Later in the first quarter, Kent Shelby hauled in a touchdown pass. David Bush also had a touchdown grab before the second quarter was over, giving the Cowboys a 20-0 lead going into the half. In the second half, McNeese scored on Ryan Ross and Grant Ashcraft touchdown runs.

Daniel Sams lead the offense with 174 yards passing with two touchdowns, and added 78 yards on the ground. Ashcraft went 6/7 passing with a rushing touchdown. Ross gained 73 yards rushing, while David Hamm added 59 yards of his own. The receiving corp was led by Tavarious Battiste with five catches for 67 yards. Shelby and Austin Nelson also added over 40 yards receiving each.

The Cowboys’ defense limited the Choctaws to only 114 yards of total offense. Andre Fuller had the Cowboys first interception of the year.

The Cowboys will return to Southland Conference play next Saturday when they visit in-state rival, Nicholls State. The game will be televised on Cox Sports TV, with kickoff slated for 2:30 p.m.
