DENTON, Texas– The Tulane Green Wave again proved why they should be looked at as the team to beat in the AAC. After a startling 1st quarter in which Tulane raced to a 17-point lead, Jon Sumerall’s team staved off the late game heroics of the Mean Green, effectively improving to 6-2 on the season while remaining unbeaten in the conference (4-0).
Makhi Hughes was spectacular Saturday evening, rushing for a career best 195 yards on 30 carries. The sophomore running back is now the leader in the American Conference in both rushing yards (930) and total yards from scrimmage (1046). In just the first half alone Hughes carried the ball for 169 yards on 20 carries as Tulane would go into the half 31-17.
Hughes was accompanied by the imposing offensive line which has no trouble paving the way for the star running back. Saturday’s showcase was one that personified John Sumrall’s football team, “physical, tough, high effort”. The Green Wave big men were violent throughout the game, punishing double team blocks, getting to the second level, as well as pulling and trapping effectively.
Darian Mensah returned to his usual efficient play, completing 10 of 13 passes for 175 yds and 3 TDs to just 1 INT. Mensah’s INT was the 1st Tulane turnover in 5 games, ending their streak of games without a TO. The interception proved costly as North Texas would score the ensuing drive, keeping them within two scores at half time.
The second half was highly entertaining. North Texas showed why they were the highest scoring offense in the conference, scoring 13 unanswered points in the 4th quarter and nearly pulling off the impressive rally.
Chandler Morris was terrific on the day completing 38 of 55 passes for 449 yds and 3 TDs. Morris who is the son of offensive guru Chad Morris, leads the American conference in both passing yards and attempts. His teammate DT Sheffield was also highly effective racking in 8 catches for 125 yards and a touchdown.
Coach Sumrall was pleased with his team’s performance but spoke on how they will have little time to celebrate before Thursday’s matchup against Charlotte. Tulane will travel to Charlotte (3-5) for their 5th straight conference matchup.
