LSU SWEEPS OPENING WEEK OF 2018 LSWA PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

BATON ROUGE – The LSU Tigers, off a Sunday night win over No. 8 Miami in Arlington, Texas, swept the opening week selections of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association for state college players of the week.

The Tigers scored a 33-17 win over the Hurricanes.

Running back Nick Brossette was named the Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two TDs and rushing for 125 yards; linebacker Jacob Phillips, who returned an interception for a 45-yard touchdown, was the Defensive POW; and, Cole Tracy, in his LSU debut, made four field goals to earn Special Teams honors.

Here are the capsules for the winners:

NICK BROSSETTE – LSU — RB

In just his second career start, paced the Tiger offense with a career-best 125 yards on 22 carries (also a career-best) in the 33-17 win over Miami … Scored the first two TDs of his career, the first coming on a 50-yard run in the first quarter that gave LSU a 10-3 lead … Added another TD on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, stretching the margin to 17-3 … Averaged 5.7 yards per carry in the win.

DEFENSE

JACOB PHILLIPS – LSU — LB

In first career start, the sophomore recorded a career-best 7 tackles to go along with an interception in the 33-17 victory … Returned the interception 45 yards for a touchdown, pushing the LSU lead to 27-3 late in the second quarter … Overall, paced a defense that limited Miami to 83 rushing yards and 342 total yards … LSU’s defense sacked the Miami quarterback four times and forced two turnovers in the victory.

SPECIAL TEAMS

COLE TRACY – LSU — PK

In LSU debut, the graduate transfer was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals, including a school-record tying 54-yarder in the third quarter that put the Tigers up 33-3 … Opened scoring with a 43-yarder in the first quarter giving LSU a 3-0 lead … Added a pair of 21-yard field goals to complete the perfect LSU debut … Finished with 15 total, which ranks tied for fourth in LSU history for points in a game by a kicker … The four field goals was one shy of tying the school record and it’s the most for a kicker in his LSU debut.
