A night after a disastrous outing against the Texas A&M Aggies, the LSU administration has decided to move on from Brian Kelly as their head coach.

This ends a streak as Brian Kelly could not do what the previous three coaches have done, which was win and bring a National Championship to Baton Rouge. When Kelly was hired in December of 2021, he brought in an impressive resume as Notre Dame’s all-time winningest coach.

The start of the Brian Kelly era had an impressive start beating Alabama and making it to the SEC Championship Game, but the program could just never build off that momentum. Along with a SEC Championship appearance, he also brought in Jayden Daniels, who will end up being the most marquee individual player out of the Brian Kelly era winning a Heisman Trophy in 2023.

LSU wasted a National Championship record breaking offense in 2023 because of a historically bad defense.

Although Kelly had a 34-13 overall record and a 19-10 record in the SEC, it was his inability to win the big games that mattered the most going 5-11 against ranked opponents. Through four years, LSU was never close in reaching the College Football Playoff, which expanded to 12 teams last year.

2025 was an all in year for the LSU program investing $20 million in their roster while returning a veteran quarterback as well as both coordinators. A month ago, it looked as if LSU was on their way to accomplishing their goals starting off to a 4-0 start as the number three team in the country, but three losses in the last four weeks to Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, and now, Texas A&M has officially put the Tigers out of playoff contention before Halloween.

Kelly is roughly owed a $54 million buyout, which would be the second largest in college football history. Right now, LSU and Brian Kelly are working towards a negotiated buyout heading into the Tigers’ open date.

While LSU looks for their next head coach, longtime running backs coach and associate head coach Frank Wilson will be named as the interim head coach moving forward. Wilson has head coaching experience at McNeese State and UTSA prior to his return to Baton Rouge.

LSU will be competing with the likes of Florida, Penn State, Arkansas, UCLA, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State, and others for their next head coaches.
