LSU Fall Practice #4 Report: Aaron Anderson Not Dressed, Ju’Juan Johnson Getting Reps at Running Back, and More!

For the second time, the media got to see the entire LSU practice with the first three periods being filmed. Like Thursday, the practice started with an extended look at special teams with both Damian Ramos and Aeron Burrell attempting field goals. Grant Chadwick was taking first team reps as the punter when the practice shifted outdoors.  Zavion Thomas, Barion Brown,  Kyle Parker, and Phillip Wright were all working reps as punt returners.

Also, for the second time in a row in front of the media, Aaron Anderson was not in pads, but he was out there today with a sleeve on his left leg.

With Anderson being out, Destyn Hill, who has been a standout throughout the first week of practice, got first team reps at wide receiver with Chris Hilton Jr. and Zavion Thomas.

The same offensive line also took reps with the first team unit for the most part, but Coen Echols got some reps at left guard.  Weston Davis and Tyree Adams have been solid at left and right tackle as they were both pushing guys in the run game and handling themselves pretty well against some of the edge rushers. Throughout the course of practice, there have been multiple rotations with the wide receivers and also the starting defense in 7v7 and 11v11 action.

What was interesting was on the first snap during 11v11,  Ju’Juan Johnson lined up at quarterback and received a direct snap. There is no question that Joe Sloan wants to use Johnson’s versatility as he has lined up at not only quarterback, but actually got some work in with the running backs at practice.

Another running back that looked like was ready to go is Caden Durham. Durham was sharp in his cuts and looked explosive when he got the football with the first team offense. That is a good sign after sitting out a lot of the spring because of an ankle injury. The offense even had a play when Zavion Thomas was lined up in the backfield and caught an outlet pass from Garrett Nussmeier .

During 11v11, it was the second team defense that got the better of the second team offense with CJ Jimcoily sacked Michael Van Buren Jr. and a play later, Van Buren threw an interception to PJ Woodland deep down the field. Woodland had a good practice today as he added a nice PBU during 11v11 action later in the practice.

When it comes to 1v1s, Nic Anderson  had a good day by having a nice jump ball catch over Mansor Delane. Kyle Parker was somebody that stood out to me today as he made multiple catches and showed some nice moves in the open field, which is really encouraging after suffering an ACL injury last season. Barion Brown caught a deep pass over Ja’Keem Jackson during 1v1s.

In another 11v11 session, Garrett Nussmeier threaded the needle on a couple of passes including one to wrap the practice over the middle for a big completion to Trey’Dez Green . Besides that, the Tigers’ first team offense worked a lot in the running game. Houston transfer  A.J. Haulcy had a good practice as he was able to stop Kaleb Jackson at the line and also had a pass breakup during 1v1 action earlier in the practice. Haulcy certainly looks the part and is one of the favorites to be a starting safety day one.

Also, defensively, Harold Perkins lined up at the star position and was lining up in a pass rushing position off the edge. It is clear that they are trying to get him back to rushing the passer. He had a sack onGarrett Nussmeier today during 11v11. Defensively, there were a lot of different substitutions and movements. Davhon Keys and West Weeks  got an extended look with the first team unit. An interesting defensive front featured Jack Pyburn on the inside and Ahmad Breaux on the inside with Kolaj Cobbins and Patrick Payton on the edge. One more defensive player that stood out on the defensive front was freshman Jaiden Braker, who got a sack today and looks the part at 6’3, 220 pounds.
