Lions knock off the UIW Cardinals to Earn their 5th Conference Win

Coach Ron Roberts and the Southeastern Louisiana University Lions traveled to San Antonio, Texas this weekend in a showdown against University of Incarnate Word. Unfortunately for both sides, the first half was tight-locked and low-scoring with a score of 7-3 at the end of the first half. The only big highlights came after a 3-0 UIW lead at the top of the second quarter, where running back Julius Maracalin broke free for a 56-yard run. Two plays later, Maracalin would punch it into the end zone from 10 yards out to take a 7-3 lead. The Cardinals of Incarnate Word would get the ball back on the next drive and take the ball all the way into SLU’s red zone, but the defense tightened up to force a 4th down field goal attempt that would end up blocked by Lions’ linebacker Tre Bennett.

In the 3rd quarter, Maracalin would get the ground game rolling again to set up a 24-yard Jonathan Tatum field goal. On the Lions’ next drive, quarterback D’Shaie Landor and wide receiver Juwan Dickey would develop a good connection in the passing game by hooking up for 19 yards, 13 yards, and a 14-yard touchdown pass. On the following drive before the end of the 3rd quarter, Maracalin reeled off a run 50 yards, his second run of 50 or more yards. Then on the second play of the 4th quarter, Landor hit Juwan Dickey for a 16-yard touchdown pass, but Tatum would miss the extra point, making it a 23-3 ball game. Each side would score another touchdown before the clock ran out, making it a final score of 30-10.

Coach Roberts and the Southeastern Lions are now stand at a record of 5-4 overall with a conference record of 5-2. This upcoming Saturday, November 12th, will be Southeastern’s last home game in Hammond at Strawberry Stadium with a kickoff time set for 7pm.
