Lions Begin 2017 Preparations, Open Spring Practice

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team will begin preparations for the 2017 season, as spring practice opens Monday at 4:30 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.

The Lions return 48 letter winners – including five All-Southland Conference performers – from last season’s roster. SLU won six of its last seven games, finishing 7-4 overall and 7-2 in Southland Conference play, placing third in the league standings.

On the offensive side of the ball, Southeastern head coach Ron Roberts and his staff will be looking to replace 2016 senior quarterbacks Justin Alo and D’Shaie Landor. Junior returner Donovan Isom and sophomore midyear transfer Chandler Eiland are the top candidates to win the job under center.

A trio of All-Southland Conference performers return on the offensive side of the ball. Junior running back Julius Maracalin (747 yards, 8 TD in 2016), senior wide receiver Juwan Dickey (42 catches, 768 yards, 7 TD) and senior offensive lineman Travis Romero (three-year starter on the offensive line) all were among the league’s elite a season ago.

Two All-Southland Conference newcomers who were immediate impact players in their respective debut seasons in Hammond a year ago return to lead the defense. Senior linebacker Sione Teuhema (8.5 TFL, 4 sacks) and senior defensive back Max Lyons (73 tackles, Southland-high three fumble recoveries) are both back in 2017.

After opening practice on Monday, the Lions are scheduled to work over the next several weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 10 a.m. Spring drills will culminate with the annual Spring Game as part of Super Lion Saturday on April 1 at 2 p.m.

SLU will open the 2017 season on Sept. 2 at in-state FBS foe Louisiana-Lafayette. Southeastern opens its five-game home schedule on Sept. 9, hosting Bethune Cookman. League foes Lamar, Nicholls, Incarnate Word and Sam Houston State will also visit Strawberry Stadium in the coming season.
