Grambling Third Loss in a Row

Grambling Third Loss in a Row

The Grambling State Tigers dropped their third game in a row on Saturday, losing to Bethune-Cookman 36-23. This isn’t exactly the start the Tigers were anticipating entering the 2014 season. Grambling will open SWAC play next Saturday as they travel to Mississippi to take on Jackson State.

Offense

After being shutout by Houston last week, the Tigers had a lot to improve on going into this weekend. Grambling still started out slow scoring only three points in the first and second quarters. The Tigers only rushed for 47 yards on 33 attempts for a 1.4-yard per carry average.  This rushing attack is going to have to improve if Grambling wants to be competitive in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Tigers did show some life in the second half by scoring 17 points in the third quarter. Two touchdown passes by Stephen Johnson gave Grambling the 24-23 lead going into the fourth quarter. The offense suddenly went cold and didn’t score a point in the fourth quarter. Hopefully the Tigers can put everything together and get a full game of solid offense against Jackson State this Saturday.

Defense

The Grambling defense really had trouble stopping the rushing attack of Bethune-Cookman. The Tigers gave up 231 yards on 52 carries and 4 touchdowns. This front 7 for Grambling is going to have to step up if they want to be a solid defense. If they can stop the run I can see this team getting a few wins on the board. We shall see if this defense is going to step up or back down entering conference play this Saturday against Jackson State.
