GF 2025 Spring Tour: St. Michael and Fontainebleau Play First Ever Game at Warrior Stadium

St. Michael fans have been waiting for over two years to finally start playing football games in their stadium and that day finally came on Tuesday as the Warriors took on the Fontainebleau Bulldogs for the spring game. Here are some notes and highlights about both teams from the spring scrimmage.

Fontainebleau Bulldogs:

The Fontainebleau Bulldogs were able to spoil the party for the St. Michael Warriors in debuting their new stadium for the spring game pulling out a 7-0 win, but for head coach Johnny Kavanaugh, the win meant a lot more than that as the Bulldogs are getting ready for the summer.

“It’s an honor. I appreciate Coach Leger for allowing us to be in the scrimmage. What a beautiful facility and obviously, nobody has played here before. It’s just a fantastic facility for St. Michael’s and it is going to be a drawing point for them. This is impressive and they are a first class organization. It was a honor to be on the field with them and our guys executed. We were happy with it. Every coach is going to tell you that they have stuff to work on. We obviously have stuff to work on, but we played well. We are playing 90% sophomores and juniors. Anytime that we can get good production and can compete with a good football team, I feel good about it.”

A young player that really impressed not only in the live quarter scrimmage, but in the scripted scrimmage and that was 2028 running back Sheldon Asmore. Asmore broke two long runs for touchdowns at the beginning and scored the only touchdown during live action for the scrimmage.

He was the main breakout star, but Coach Kavanaugh was impressed by the play of his young team overall.

“Our young running back Sheldon Asmore is going to be a sophomore. He is just a burner. When he gets loose, he is dangerous. I was really impressed with him. Our offensive line is all pretty young and they tended to stand out as well. The number one thing is that if you don’t give up any points, you are not going to lose. We didn’t give up any points tonight. Our defense got a shutout in the scrimmage portion of it and the half portion of it.”

The Bulldogs certainly have a formula to make things interesting in a tough division. With a confident young offensive line, two athletic quarterbacks in Conner Tyson and Logan Astugue, two talented playmakers in Semaj Whittine and Sheldon Asmore, and finally, an emerging defense, the Bulldogs could make positive steps forward in 2025.

St. Michael Warriors:

Although St. Michael did not score a touchdown in the spring game, it was still an exciting way for the Warriors to debut their new stadium in front of their fans and give everybody a snippet for what is an unbelievably bright future for Warriors Stadium.

“It is an opportunity that we have talked about. It’s something that we are trying to get our kids to understand. There have been 40 years of football coming through this school and guys have dreamed about this opportunity. To come out here and to have our home field and to come out of our own locker room and not to go on our bus, words can’t put in what it means to us. The atmosphere was electric. We had a great crowd and just blessed and honored to be here.”

There were some positive signs about what the Warriors did earlier this week and throughout spring despite the usual rustiness that comes with it.

“I can’t be more proud of what they did this spring. It’s a spring game. There are going to be some execution issues. There are going to be some things that don’t fall the way we need them to. It’s an evaluation and a test about where we are at for fall camp. We had 8 days and this was the 9th day. To be able to put this together in 9 days and be able to compete, that is all we can ask for.

Gridiron Football All-American invite Johnny McCarty stood out as a pass catcher consistently making catches for his quarterback Caden Levingston, who did a great job of improvising and escaping when plays are broken down. Linebacker Jackson Samson and ATH CJ Levingston were also bright spots throughout the scrimmage as well.

“We got a great senior group. They have been here since I’ve started and that was my second year. They watched what we have done and had opportunities to be a part of our success. They are a small group of nine kids. They want it and they are hungry. We have some good athletes in that group and they can really help push our younger ones forward.”

The Warriors will get ready for the fall starting in June and Coach Leger knows that he is going to have a scrappy group of players that will be looking forward to competing.

“They see the writing on the wall. We have a great group of kids that are going to compete and fight. Once we put in a full summer, fall camp, and all those things, I believe the fans are going to be excited for St. Michael football.”
