Edna Karr (LA) 2026 QB John Johnson is Gridiron Football Player of Week 15

The final Gridiron Football Player of the Week for the 2025 season goes to Edna Karr High School (New Orleans, LA) QB John Johnson, who led the Cougars to their second straight state championship with a 49-14 win over St. Augustine in the Division I Select State Championship.

“It means a lot to go out with two state championships. I feel like this is the best team to come through Edna Karr.”

That is saying a lot as this Edna Karr dynasty under Brice Brown has won six state championships with two of those going back to back. With 15 players going to play college football and having 27 straight wins, there is definitely a case to be made about this being the best Edna Karr team. Getting to learn under coaches like Brice Brown and also his dad John Johnson II as his offensive coordinator has helped turn him into one of the best quarterbacks in Louisiana.

“It means the world playing for my dad and Coach Brice. Those are the two best coaches in the nation in my opinion and it’s a true blessing to have my dad as a coach. Without those two, I wouldn’t be the quarterback I am today. They taught me a lot and gave me hard coaching because that’s what I need to be successful.”

In Johnson’s last game as a Cougar, he finished completing 15/18 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown while adding another four touchdowns on the ground. This performance made him the top vote getter this week with 500 votes.

“I give myself an 8/10. I finished with five touchdowns, but it could have been six or seven if we would’ve capitalized earlier in the game.”

Johnson has accomplished a whole lot over his historic prep career as a two time Catholic League MVP, All-Metro Player of the Year, 1st Team All-State Selection, and Warrick Dunn Player of the Year finalist. Finishing with 11,003 total yards and 135 total touchdowns, Hollywood as he is nicknamed will take his talents to West Virginia where he will be playing quarterback for the Mountaineers.

“West Virginia will be getting a humble, hardworking winner, a strong leader, and someone who is ready to compete.”

As John Johnson is finishing one football career and starting another one, he will miss the memories that he has made while suiting up for the Cougars.

“I’m going to miss the brotherhood this team brings. Every last player on that team is like a true brother to me and it’s going to be tough going our separate ways.”
