Diamond In The Rough: Caleb Spann

Caleb Spann is a class of 2021 safety out of John Curtis High School in New Orleans, LA. Spann is 5’11” and weighs 190 pounds. He excels at covering and you can always count on him to give you a big hit when needed. He has firm ball skills and is flexible as he can even plays as a cornerback. As a freshman, he was All-American. He also helped John Curtis win a State Championship back in 2018. Span is involved in the Spirit Club, Student Council, FCA and National Honors Society at John Curtis High. He is also apart of the Basketball team and has a 4.0 GPA and 21 on his ACT.

At what age did you begin playing football and what pushed you to play this sport?

I began playing football around the age of five. I have a big sports family, so I had no choice but to play. That was really my motivation to play. Ever since that age, I’ve been in love with the game.

I see you play basketball as well! What’s your position in basketball and how do you feel like that helps you on the football field?

I play a couple of positions. We’re not a big time, so I rotated around. I would say I am mainly a guard. Basketball helps me vision wise and being able to check different receivers. It really just keeps my stamina up and helps me know the playbooks better from my memorization in basketball.

What’s your favorite thing about your position?

I love that I am in a spot to be able to make plays. I play safety at John Curtis, so I am always lined up with the best receiver in the slot. I get to run up and make tackles. To play my position, you need to be really aggressive and know what you’re doing.

What are some goals you have for season?

Winning a State Championship is really the main focus. For myself, I want to be First Team All-State and First Team All-District.

What’s been the highlight of your football career?

I would saying winning the State Championship back in 2018 was the highlight of my career. That was my highest moment.

How do you think coaches and teammates would describe you?

They would describe me as a leader. They would say I am a guy that takes responsibility, is energetic, and loves to play football. I love the game.

What has football taught you about yourself or life?

Football has taught me that if you want something badly, you have to go for it and work. If you want something to happen, it’s up to you to make it happen.

What’s your favorite thing about playing football in Louisiana?

I love the high level of competition. There’s a lot of great teams in Louisiana. We can never go into a game thinking it’s an easy win, so we just always bring our best. You never know what can happen.

What would you tell younger players who want to play high school football one day?

I would tell them that it’s a great experience. You get to make great connections with your teammates and coaches. You also get to make memories on the field as you play against some of the best players in the nation.

What would you say are some of your strengths?

I would say I am very versatile as I can play a lot of positions on offense and defense. I am very aggressive and I know how to make a big play. I play fast and smart.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Hopefully, I will be in the NFL. If not, I want to go into Pre-Medicine to become a Dermatologist!

Three words to describe yourself?

Smart, caring and intelligent.

How do you prepare for an upcoming game?

I watch film the whole week. The night before, I watch my opponent’s main game to see what they’ll do. My mother packs lunch, so I eat that before and hang out with my friends. I don’t have a specific, special rituals.

If you could vacation anywhere in the world right now, where would you pick?

I would pick Miami, Florida! I love Miami, I went there this summer and I loved the atmosphere.
