Diamond in the Rough: Brian Balestra

Brian Balestra is a 6’4” 270 lbs. offensive lineman for Jesuit High School in New Orleans, LA. With a bench press max of 270 and a squat max of 405, Balestra has the size and strength to match up with the best of them, but his skillset is the highlight of his game. Balestra has a quick first step and his footwork after contact is excellent. He moves extremely well at the center position, and has no trouble blocking in the open field. In pass-protection, Balestra makes great use of his hands and feet to complement his size, and I see this as one of the strong points of his game. We have Balestra graded as a 3-star offensive lineman, and he currently has offers from Nicholls State and Southeastern, among other schools.

How long have you been playing football and what got you started playing?

I’ve been playing since I was five years old. I guess always watched football and that might be why I started.

What has football taught you?

Football has taught me to be self-motivated and that no goal is unachievable.

Where do you see football taking you in the next few years and later in life?

I think it will take me to college for free, and I don’t know where after that. Wherever the connections from it take me.

What is the strong point of your game?

I think that I am a lot more aggressive than everybody else.

Off the field, what will you bring to a college program that will make you special?

My academics are very strong.

Is there a college or professional player you would compare your game to?

Quenton Nelson (Indianapolis Colts). I like watching him play.

Do you have a game day ritual?

I listen to certain songs before the games, that’s about it.

Who has been the biggest influence on you as a football player?

My dad. He’s always pushed me to be better.

Blake Vick
