Diamond In The Rough: Alred Luke

Alred Luke Jr. is the primary slot receiver at Warren Easton High School. Although he is slightly undersized, listed at 5’8′ 165lbs, Alred makes up for it with his track-like speed on the field. He runs a 4.3 and his team utilizes every bit of it by having him line up in multiple positions on offense. On tape you can see him line up at every receiver position and even in the backfield; he is also an elite return man on special teams and even has earned playing time on defense. Alred is very quick and shifty, but he is also extremely sure handed and tougher than his size would indictate.

How long have you been playing football?

I have been playing football since I was about 4 years old.

Do you play any other sports?

Yes sir, I run track.

What is one of your biggest accomplishments on the field?

My freshmen year, I won rookie of the year for my team.

How was last season?

I would say last season was very difficult. We lost our quarterback at the beginning of the season and had to put a safety there. We became a better team as time went on, that’s really all I can say about that.

What expectations do you have for this season?

For the team, I expect to win the state championship because we have come up short the past few years. For myself, I want to have a 2000 all-purpose yard season.

Is there anyone you try to model your game after?

Tavon Austin from his days at West Virginia.

What do you think you need to improve on the most?

My leadership and my ability to get physical with defensive backs.

How would you describe yourself as a teammate?

I’m not a vocal leader, I try to lead by example and help lift you up.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I would say play 2K and maybe play some basketball.

How have you stayed in shape?

Just staying active, track has helped me mostly stay in football shape.

What do you love most about playing football?

The team aspect. We all need each other to win and count on each other to succeed. I like being able to work together with my teammates.

How do you get ready for a game?

I like listening to some calming music, mostly female artists who can really sing. That gets me focused.

What is your biggest motivation to play football?

I honestly want a state championship and a free education, that’s really all that motivates me.

Any advice for younger players?

Just buy into the process, don’t skip any workouts or practice. Once you buy in, you will get what you deserve.
