Defense Rules the Day in 2016 Tulane Football Spring Game

Running back Sherman Badie runs for 67 yards, 1 Touchdown

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane redshirt-sophomore defensive tackle Robert Kennedy recorded eight tackles, including four of the defense’s nine sacks, and redshirt-senior running back Sherman Badie led the offense with 67 yards and one touchdown during the Green Wave’s 2016 spring game today at Yulman Stadium.

Tulane head coach Willie Fritz ran a controlled scrimmage of 70 plays and kept the quarterbacks off limits from being tackled.  Kennedy was one of six defenders to record a sack and sophomore safety Roderic Teamer corralled a tipped pass from freshman quarterback Darius Bradwell for the game’s lone interception.

“It was good to get out there today and simulate as close as we could to a live game even though the quarterbacks were off limits,” Fritz said.  “I tried to limit plays because we don’t have a lot of depth right now so there were quite a few players who did get quite a few plays.  I saw some good things and now we can evaluate and see what we did well and see what we did poorly and create a pecking order as far as a depth chart is concerned. There’s a lot of things we need to work on and as a head coach you are never satisfied and you shouldn’t be as a football play either.”

Junior running back Dontrell Hilliard finished behind Badie in rushing with 48 yards on three carries but did register the longest play of the day with a 40-yard gallop down the right sideline that set up Badie’s touchdown three plays later.  Redshirt-senior running back Josh Rounds finished with 44 yards in helping the Tulane offense roll up 192 yards on the ground.

Redshirt-senior quarterback Devin Powell completed his first four pass attempts and finished the day 5-of-7 for 59 yards and recorded the longest pass play of the day with a 20-yard completion to classmate Larry Dace III.  Dace led the receiving corps with 30 yards on a pair of catches.

Redshirt-sophomore quarterback Glenn Cuiellette hooked up with sophomore receiver Chaz Augustini for a six-yard touchdown for the game’s first score.
Tulane will close out its spring campaign with its final practice on Monday, April 18 at 8:15 a.m. at Yulman Stadium.
