U-High Cubs Move to the Quarterfinals

Baton Rouge, LA- The Cubs got off to a nice start as they scored on the opening drive of the game. Mike Hollins scored on an 18-yard rushing touchdown up the middle of the field after establishing himself several times on the drive already. The Cubs returned the ball nearly to midfield on kickoff to help setup a strong drive on a good field position.

Shortly afterwards, Heath Pinell recovered a fumble on the kick return. The recovery would give the Cubs the ball on the opposition’s 9-yard line. Mike Hollins would power his way through for the 6-yard rushing touchdown to give the Cubs an early 14-0 lead.

The Warriors struggled to move the ball offensively as University Lab held their receivers in check and forced them to run the ball. However, St. Michael’s would find a way to move down the field and get a field goal out of the drive to put points on the board. The Cubs still hold a 14-3 lead.

University Lab answered back with a kickoff return by Mike Hollins for his 3rd touchdown in the 1st Quarter. The Cubs are very explosive at the moment as they now have a 21-3 lead.

A risky 4th down call would result in a turnover for St. Michael’s. University Lab would get the ball back on the 25-yard line. They would easily run the ball in for another touchdown as the Warriors struggled to tackle the ball carrier all night. The Cubs go ahead 28-3.

The Warriors offensive woes continued throughout the 2nd Quarter as they could not get much of anything going against a tough Cub’s defense. A great punt return brought the Cubs right back in scoring position. Mike Hollins would rush for his 3rd touchdown of the night with having four in total before halftime. The 11-yard rushing touchdown gave the Cubs a convincing 35-3 lead.

The Cubs stingy defense kept the Warriors in check as they barely allowed any yards to be given up. St. Michael’s was pinned against their 1-yard line and was forced to punt yet again to put the Cubs in a decent field position. The return was good for 20 yards bringing Mike Hollins and the crew back into red zone territory. Hollins scored another touchdown on an 18-yard run to put a five-touchdown effort in the books before halftime. The score, 42-3.

The Cubs would not ease off the gas pedal as they kept racking up points on the scoreboard. After taking out Hollins and most of the starters, University Lab found other playmakers on the team. Hess would come around on a 4-yard sweep and darted to the end zone for a touchdown. The Cubs go ahead 49-3 with 2:00 minutes left in the 1st half.

St. Michael’s found some momentum as they scored on the opening drive of the 2nd half. Jace Brown caught a 12-yard reception for the 1st Warrior touchdown of the night. The score, 49-10 with the Cubs still ahead.

Things got really interesting when St. Michael’s recovered an onside kickoff on the following play. The Warriors would get the ball back and T.J. Sibley would score a 60-yard rushing touchdown weaving his way in-and-out of defenders. The Warriors are closing the gap with the score going to 49-17.

University Lab took the ball on the following drive and ran the clock down heavily as St. Michael’s started to find a little bit of a rhythm. Although they did not score any 2nd half points, the Cubs’ defense proved solid enough to hold off the surging 2nd half Warriors. Sibley would throw a late 4th Quarter touchdown to Andre Heathers and successfully converted a point conversion to bring the final score to 49-25.

University Lab will continue their State Championship run as they move on to the Quarterfinals next week.
