The Catholic High Bears enter the 2025 season as one of the heavy favorites to win a state championship and the old saying goes that defense wins championships. One of the veteran signal callers that will be anchoring the middle of the Bears defense is rising senior Maxwell Maurer.

“A linebacker must have knowledge of what to expect and what’s going on. You got to know a lot of things and sometimes, you’re the quarterback of the defense.”

Entering his third year as a starter, the 5’10, 192 pound linebacker has been a tackling machine for the Orange and Black. In his first full time season as a starter, Maurer finished with 75 tackles, two interceptions, and three fumble recoveries. He followed that up with an even bigger season last year as a junior with 91 tackles (33 solo), four fumble recoveries, and a key interception in a district championship victory over Zachary. Not to mention, the 1st Team All-District linebacker is a four year letterman getting some action as a freshman with 29 stops. Playing at a Class 5A football powerhouse like Catholic High for four years is an impressive accomplishment and Maurer would have it no other way.
“You know they say it’s more than four. It’s a lifetime, you know. It definitely is. You look up at the stands on Friday night and you know they’re probably packing the biggest high school stadium in Louisiana every Friday night. You see all the alumni and different people that support you and it just motivates you to keep it going and leave it better than you found it.”

A key to being a four year letterman and an All-District player at the highest level is not only physical attributes, but the mental attributes. The way the soft spoken Maurer approaches the game is his work ethic, preparation, and his unselfishness for the betterment of the team.
“I just want to be the best teammate that I can be and just doing homework and research before every game to be prepared in order to play the best of my ability. Hopefully, those individual accolades will come, but most importantly, focus on the team accolades because that’s what’s most important.”

While focusing on those team attributes, Maurer has been able to pick up some recognition along the way including receiving an invite to play in this year’s 2025 Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game.
“It’s an awesome opportunity to play in the Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game. I can’t thank you all enough.”

Not only Maurer’s work ethic and preparation has gotten him to this point, but he is also a smart, savvy player that is athletic in space and knows how to eave his way around blocks to get to the ball carriers. He is also strong and tough in the middle to help out in the running game while versatile enough in coverage to even have a couple of interceptions in his career. Those attributes have attracted a couple of colleges including Millsaps, which offered him a scholarship in the spring.
“It’s been good. Coach Taylor came to the practice in the spring and gave me the offer. It’s been good. They’ve been reaching out a lot. I also met with McNeese’s coaches in the late spring at the end of the school year. He said that the coaching staff had seen my film and a coach from Stephen F. Austin reached out as well.”

Modeling his game after NFL standout linebackers like Patrick Queen and Fred Warner, Maurer has been watching film and has spent the offseason in continuing to work on areas to his game.
“I am just working on the fundamentals like sound and perfect so I can slow down the game and make me see the game a lot quicker. I am also working on my agility and movement.”

Ever since first grade, Maurer has been playing the game of football and enjoys the camaraderie of being around his teammates the most.
“What I enjoy about football the most is enjoying and spending quality time with the brothers and friends that will last a lifetime and being to go out there and playing for them and your family.”

Starting on the 2023 Catholic High football state championship team as a sophomore, Maxwell Maurer is 100% focused on ending his high school career in similar fashion that got his prep career started.
“That would mean the world to end my high school career on top of the world. That would just mean everything to me. Finishing it out with a win is probably the best thing you can ask for as a high school player.”
