BJ Melancon: Rising Star in the Gridiron Football Top 300

Bra’jon “BJ” Melancon is putting North Iberville High School in Maringouin, Louisiana, on the map. A two‑way weapon at wide receiver and cornerback, BJ has earned a coveted spot in the Gridiron Football Top 300 for the class of 2027. At 6’2″ and 165 lbs, he combines elite length with refined athleticism, and carries a 3.4 GPA off the field, proving he excels in both arenas.

BJ first got my attention during the 2022 Gridiron Football JR All-American Bowl game that was played in Orange Beach, AL. Since 2022, BJ has been seen improving during 7 on 7 and for the Bears of North Iberville.

In June at LSU, he was timed in the 4.55‑second 40, and by August his head coach clocked him at 4.48, numbers that confirm his speed is real. As a sophomore in 2024, BJ not only made All‑District at WR and CB, he earned 2nd Team All-State as a cornerback. His talent has already drawn an offer from Kentucky State, with serious interest coming from LSU, Louisiana, and beyond.

In the Gridiron Football grading system, BJ is ranked a 4‑star prospect, praised for his size, speed, and technical polish. He’s chasing even bigger goals this season:

  • After putting up 800 yards receiving last year, he wants 1,000 yards this season
  • He totaled 4 interceptions and aims for 7 this season
  • He recorded 10 pass breakups and is targeting 13 PBU
  • Ultimately, BJ says, “I want to go to state.”

Through four games, he’s delivering on those promises: 4 interceptions, 3 pass breakups, 5 touchdowns, and 200 receiving yards, leading North Iberville to a 4–0 record and the No. 1 ranking in the state.

When asked about his biggest improvement, BJ cited getting sharper out of breaks at cornerback, explaining how he spent summer sessions on 45‑degree breaks, 90‑degree breaks, and hip flip drills, plus double sessions of film work and muscle memory.

He says his greatest strength is football IQ:

“I understand not only my assignment but my teammates’ assignments, and what the opposing offense will do based on tendencies.”

Though he plays both sides, BJ feels most confident at cornerback:

“At 6’2” with long arms, I get in receivers’ faces, swat passes down, that’s where I feel strongest.”

When asked what a college gets when he signs:

“A leader, not just a good athlete … someone who leads his team, cares about schoolwork, and helps teammates after school with homework.”

Looking ahead:

“In five years, I see myself playing high-level college football, prepping for the NFL, while earning my bachelor’s and planning life after football.”

He models his game after legends on both sides:

On offense, Brian Thomas Jr. and Julio Jones—for size and route ability
On defense, Patrick Surtain II and Jalen Ramsey—for long, physical coverage styles

BJ also paused to thank those who got him here:

“I thank my mom, my stepdad Blaine, and my grandfather. They’ve always supported me and been role models.”

BJ Melancon is no longer a hidden diamond. He’s already shining under the lights, and with his blend of physical tools, football smarts, leadership, and ambition; he’s just getting started. Watch closely.
