Ben Wooldridge Leads Ragin’ Cajuns’ Offense Through a Competitive Midseason

At the midpoint of the 2024 season, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns sit at 4-1, with their offensive unit firing on all cylinders. Central to their success has been the leadership and play of quarterback Ben Wooldridge. Wooldridge, who has thrown for over 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns, has been the steady force behind an offense averaging 34.2 points per game.

Ben Wooldridge: The Offensive Engine

Wooldridge’s consistency has been one of the highlights for Louisiana. Through five games, he has completed 101 of 145 passes, boasting a 69.7% completion rate and a quarterback efficiency rating of 158.6. His ability to make key plays in critical moments has kept the Cajuns competitive, even in their lone loss to Tulane (33-41).

One of Wooldridge’s standout performances came in the season opener against Grambling, where he completed 25 of 33 passes for 308 yards and three touchdowns. His 56-yard touchdown pass to Tavion Smith showcased his ability to connect on deep throws and stretch the field.

Offensive Balance

While Wooldridge has been the focal point of the passing game, the Ragin’ Cajuns have also demonstrated a balanced offensive attack. Louisiana has rushed for 947 yards through five games, with running backs Bill Davis and Zylan Perry leading the charge. Davis has 360 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while Perry has added 303 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Wooldridge himself has contributed to the rushing game, with 97 yards and three touchdowns on the season. His dual-threat ability allows the offense to remain unpredictable, keeping defenses on their heels.

Key Receivers Stepping Up

The Cajuns’ receiving corps has also played a significant role in the team’s offensive success. Wooldridge has distributed the ball effectively to multiple targets, with Lance LeGendre leading the team in receiving yards (255) and touchdown receptions (3). Terrance Carter has also been a reliable option, catching 18 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns.

In Louisiana’s win over Wake Forest, Wooldridge completed 20 of 29 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns, including a 48-yard touchdown pass to LeGendre. His ability to connect with different receivers has made the Cajuns’ passing game difficult to defend.

Strong Defensive Contributions

While the offense has been dynamic, Louisiana’s defense has held its own, allowing only 22.4 points per game. The defense has recorded 21 tackles for loss and five sacks, with players like Cameron Whitfield and Caleb Kibodi contributing big plays. The defense’s ability to force turnovers, including two interceptions, has been crucial in key games.

Looking Ahead

With the second half of the season looming, the Ragin’ Cajuns are poised to make a run for the Sun Belt Championship. Wooldridge’s leadership and playmaking ability will be central to their success as they face tougher conference opponents. If he continues his impressive form, Louisiana will remain a formidable team, with hopes of finishing the season strong and earning a bowl game invitation.
