A RECORD SETTING NIGHT IN STRAWBERRY STADIUM

A RECORD SETTING NIGHT IN STRAWBERRY STADIUM

This weekend was a huge weekend for the Southeastern Lions as they took on the Houston Baptist Huskies. The Lions came into this game after a much needed bye week and a much needed rest. The Lions coming into this game had an overall record of 6-3 and were 4-1 in their Southland conference games. The Huskies are very new to the Southland Conference and came into this game with an overall record of 2-7 and were 1-5 in Southland play. Even though the Lions were the highly favored team in this matchup, they knew the importance of getting in a big win before next weekend when they take on the McNeese State Cowboys. I was able to attend this game with LGF owner Coach Andy, and we had no idea what type of record setting night we were about to witness at Strawberry Stadium.

The Lions came out strong in this game bringing in a touchdown on their first drive of the game. For the Lions, Senior QB Bryan Bennett started this game off going 6-of-10 for 126 yards and passed for 2 touchdowns in the first quarter. However, Bennett suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter after such a great start and it was Senior QB Jordan Barnett’s game from that point on. The Lions ended the first quarter with a 14-7 lead over the Huskies, but the Lions would take the game to a whole new level in the upcoming quarters. The Lions would go on to score 62 unanswered points fallowing the first quarter and they won the game 76-7. It was a game that showed dominance on both the defense and offensive side of the ball for the Lions. QB Barnett really filled in Bennett’s offensive leader role very well and had an extraordinary game. Barnett ended up going 13-of-17 passing for 233 yards and 3 touchdowns. Along with Barnett, Sophomore QB D’Shaie Landor was able to get some playing time and went 2-2 passing for 85 yards and also had a rushing touchdown. The Rushing game was very dominant for the Lions putting up 362 yards on the ground. The rushing leader for the Lions was Freshman RB Eugene Bethea who had 125 yards on 14 carries. Junior RB Kody Sutton had the biggest impact rushing the ball with 109 yards on 11 carries with 3 touchdowns. There were a lot of career highs for the receiving core of the Lions in this game. Senior WR Chris Malott had a career high game with 103 yards off of 3 receptions with 2 touchdown catches. Junior Jeff Smiley also had a career high game with 90 yards off of 6 receptions with 2 touchdown catches. Senior WR Devante Scott had an impressive game as usual with 102 yards off of 4 receptions with a touchdown reception. The Lions defense shut down the Huskies offense the whole game only allowing 80 total yards and 1 touchdown for the entire game. The Lions brought the pressure to the Huskies QB who only had 30 yards passing for the game. The Lions defense will need to keep up their shut down defenses for their next game against the Cowboys.

As you can probably tell from the game stats listed above this was a very dominant win for the Southeastern Lions. Furthermore, the Lions broke some records in total yards for this game. The Lions put up a total of 806 offensive yards in this game which is a record for the Lions and the Southland conference. This game proved to be big for the Lions moving forward into the final stretch of the season. The Lions now have a total record of 7-3 and are in 6-1 in the Southland Conference. Next weekend the Lions will be matching up against the McNeese State Cowboys in what is predicted to be the game of the season. The Cowboys are coming off of a tough loss against SF Austin last weekend so the Lions will definitely have the momentum coming into this game. The Cowboys are currently 4-2 in the Southland conference so everything will be on the line for both teams coming into this next game. LIONUP!!
