Warhawks Halted at Appalachian State on Saturday

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State totaled 637 offensive yards on Saturday, including 429 on the ground, as the host Mountaineers defeated ULM 42-17 on a cold and windy afternoon in the North Carolina mountains.

 

THE BASICS

TURNING POINT

-Appalachian State featured a pair of running backs over 100 yards on the day, including Marcus Cox’s 153 yards and three touchdowns on the way to becoming the Mountaineers’ all-time leading rusher. Jalin Moore added 135 yards of his own, while quarterback Taylor Lamb added 92 yards on the ground to go along with his 208 passing yards.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Appalachian State struck first on Cox’s first touchdown of the day, followed by ULM’s answering drive resulting in a Craig Ford field goal. The Mountaineers quickly answered back with a 60 yard touchdown pass and led 14-3 at the end of one.

-The teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter, with Appalachian State adding to its lead on a three-yard touchdown pass on fourth and goal before the Warhawks responded with Caleb Evans’ four yard touchdown run towards the end of the half.

-Out of the halftime break, Appalachian State rattled off a pair of third quarter rushing touchdowns – first from five yards out by Cox before a 35 yard score from Lamb.

-ULM’s Austin Vaughn scored from 16 yards out seconds into the fourth quarter to pull the Warhawks closer but Cox ended the night with a 25 yard touchdown run to set the all-time mark.

 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

-ULM finished with 361 total offensive yards, including 225 yards on the ground. The Warhawks ran more plays than Appalachian State (76-69) but the hosts averaged 9.2 yards per play compared to ULM’s 4.8 yards per play.

-Caleb Evans finished the night 13-for-32 passing for 136 yards and an interception, adding 55 yards and the touchdown on the ground.

-Austin Vaughn led the rushing attack with 110 yards on 15 carries, averaging 7.3 yards per carry. Thomas Koufie added 34 yards on the ground and Duke Carter tallied 15 yards.

-Seven different receivers caught passes for ULM, led by Tre Perrier’s four catches for 47 yards.

-Defensively, Caleb Tucker and Justin Backus each finished with nine tackles, while 23 players recorded at least one tackle for ULM.

-Temperature at game time was 35 degrees, and winds were blowing at 20-25 miles per hour, as ULM played its coldest game this season.

 

UP NEXT

-The Warhawks will be off next week and will close out the 2016 season at home on Saturday, December 3 when UL Lafayette comes to JPS Field at Malone Stadium on Senior Day for the Warhawks.
