U-High Dominates Southern Lab 42-14

On a night that the Cubs seemed to have some struggles staying on the field, and sustaining drives, they always seemed to come up with the big play ability needed to find the end zone.  U-High had four big scoring plays that went for over 35 yards each time and an interception returned for a touchdown.

Coach Mahaffey said. “We can play a whole lot better. There are a lot of penalties we want to clean up; we want to get off the field on some long conversersions, but I was very pleased with the fire the guys came out with in the second half.”

And fire they did come out with! QB John Gordon McKernan was 9 of 16 for 224 and 3 touchdowns on the night, even after throwing a first quarter pick. “The biggest thing that plaesed me with (McKernan), he had the interception early but I don’t think it rattled him, he was able to come back and execute some big plays down field.” Mahaffey said.

Two of those long TD passes, one for 56 yards in the second quarter that would give U-High the lead 21-6, and one for 39 yards in the third were caught by Doryan Harris, the Cubs speedy slot receiver.

Southern Labs leading rusher Tyrion Davis had 102 yards on the ground on 14 carries. Unfortunately, the Southern Lab passing game seemed ineffective against the Cubs dominant defense and Senior QB Travon Myles was replace by freshman Angelo Izzard close to halftime.

The freshman QB would finish the night going 4 of 10 for 34 yards, that included a 20 yard touchdown to Charvis Thornthon and also had three interceptions.

On their first possession it took U-High only four plays to find the end zone when Mike Hollins had a carry for 47 yards to pay dirt.

An illegal procedure penalty overturned Southern Lab’s next touchdown, and U-High was able to hold them on downs and keep them from scoring.

JG McKernan would find Mikaya Tongue for a 42 yard strike that would end in a touchdown for U-High. Later He’d find Doryan Harris twice more to add another two TDs.
