Tulane Ready for Conference Crown

TULANE — The Tulane Green Wave have caught their stride as they have soared to a 2-0 record in the American Athletic Conference. The Green Wave posted a combined 116 points over their last two outings, asserting their stake for the conference early.

Following their up and down showing in the first three weeks of the season, the Green Wave have been outright dominant in the past two weeks. Whether on the ground or through the air, Tulane has been able to score the ball at will. The Green Wave have dominated the turnover margin, creating 5 TO’s in the past two weeks without surrendering the ball once,

In just two games Tulane has registered over 500 yards on the ground on a whooping 100 carries as a team. Makhi Hughes has been the heart of the offense, registering 4 TDs over the past two games, while also recording the longest run of his collegiate career, on a 51-yard scamper in their last game against UAB. Hughes now matches his season total of 7 touchdowns from last season and looks to continue to be improve in his impressive sophomore season. Hughes has not been alone, with major contributions coming from Tulane’s other talented backs. This was showcased in the 61-point beatdown of UAB, a game in which three Tulane running backs rushed for over 80 yards.

Coming off the bye week, Coach Sumrall spoke on the importance of consistency and not becoming complacent. “If you go out there and you have an average practice throughout the week then you’re going to have an average game”. Coming off of Tuesday’s practice coach Sumrall said that there is a standard of “physicality, effort, and toughness” that must be met for Saturday’s game.

Freshman QB Darian Mensah has been a revelation for the Green Wave, ranking 1st in passing efficiency in the AAC and top 10 overall in the country. When asked about his performance, Mensah was quick to thank his teammates for their execution and comradery off the field. Mensah also noted that he is “seeing things faster” as far as making reads and diagnosing plays.

The Green Wave are coming off their bye week well rested and ready to go. Saturday they will face off against a Rice team lead by dynamic running back Dean Connors and a defense that ranks fourth in the conference. Tulane will have home field on its side, but they will need to continue to play the physical complimentary style of football that has led them to victory on this win streak
