NEW ORLEANS – For his four-touchdown performance in the season-opening win over Grambling State, Tulane junior quarterback Jonathan Banks was named Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 5.
In his debut wearing the Olive and Blue, Banks accounted for three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. He was an efficient 10-for-15 passing for 185 yards, and rushed 16 times for 69 yards. His first passing and rushing touchdowns of his Green Wave career came in the first quarter, first a 33-yard connection with junior wide receiver Terren Encalade and then a seven-yard scamper on the ground.
Banks’ three touchdown passes were the most for Tulane since redshirt junior quarterback Glen Cuiellette threw four touchdown passes against UL Lafayette on Sept. 24, 2016. He was the first Tulane quarterback to pass and run for a touchdown in the same game since Cuiellette did it vs. Memphis on Oct. 14, 2016.
The Green Wave are on the road next week for their American Athletic Conference opener at Navy. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT with live coverage on CBS Sports Network.
