The Lions Gain an Exciting Win Against Lamar Cardinals

By: Carley Nelson

Thursday evening’s football game was nothing short of thrilling for the Southeastern Lions for more reasons than one. Key players D’Shaie Landor and Xavier Roberson returned after facing injuries and SLU extended their impressive regular season home game winning streak to 14 games with a 30-27 victory against the Lamar Cardinals.

D’Shaie Landor, Junior Quarterback, returned to the field after having been absent for majority of the last two games due to injury. This return allowed for some serious improvements on Southeastern’s offensive line. Head coach, Ron Roberts, told the press, “For sure, we introduced everyone to what D’Shaie Landon can do on a football field.” He racked up almost forty minutes of time of possession and a total of 539 yards (256 rushing, 283 thrown) in the game. Running back, Xavier Roberson, also returned and led Southeastern with 19 carries for 91 yards. Jeff Smiley, wide receiver, also finished with five catches for 135 yards and touchdown.

The defensive line’s performance overall was strong. Senior linebacker, Herbert Harris, recorded his first collegiate interception for Southeastern. However, the Cardinals still proved to be a challenge for the Lions. They allowed Lamar a total of 365 yards and fourteen first downs. This close game allowed for a showcase of the Lions’ skill and had fans on the edge of their seats. It wrapped up when Kody Sutton scored a thrilling final touchdown for a 30-27 victory over Lamar with 1:19 in the fourth quarter. Ron Roberts said, “This was a huge win for us.”

Southeastern is set to play again at McNeese State on Saturday, October 10. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
