I had the privilege to get to know Les and Kathy Miles on a personal level during the 2012 football season while I interned with the football team. You would be hard pressed to find nicer and more humble people than the Miles’. Since Les arrived at LSU 12 years ago, he had one of the best tenures in the history of the program. In the 12 seasons, he took LSU to 12 consecutive bowl games. One of the longest current streaks in the NCAA.
Miles’ 114 overall wins at LSU ranks him behind only Charles McClendon, who won 137 games in 18 years with the Tigers, while is 63 SEC regular season victories are just two shy of tying McClendon’s school record of 65. Miles is also the only coach in LSU history to beat Auburn, Florida and Alabama in same season – doing it three times – and in 2005, he became the first first-year coach in SEC history to lead a team to the league’s title game.
In the classroom, 242 football players have earned their degree since Miles took over, and two out of the last four years LSU has ranked No. 2 in the SEC in graduation rates. Under Miles, LSU has pro-duced 187 players who have earned SEC Academic Honor Roll status.
