HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team will close out spring drills on Saturday, hosting the annual Spring Game as part of Super Lion Saturday at 2 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.
The intra-squad contest will pit the SLU offense and specialists versus the Lion defense. The Southeastern offensive players and specialists will be decked out in all gold, while the SLU defenders will wear all green.
The Gold team will score points in the traditional way, while also being awarded points for first downs and big plays (rushes of 12 yards or more and passes of 16 yards or more). The Green defense will receive points for touchdowns scored by the defense, turnovers (three points), three-and-outs (two points) and defensive stops (one point).
Prior to the Spring Game, SLU Football will host a free youth camp open to children in grades 2-8. For more information, visit www.ronrobertsfootballcamps.com.
Sixth-year Lion head coach Ron Roberts has been pleased with the progress he’s seen from his team during spring camp and views the Spring Game as a chance for his team to close out spring work on a high note.
“We want to execute well and have our best performance of the spring so far,” Roberts commented. “Thursday was our best practice we’ve had by far this spring, so we want that to carry over.”
Roberts has seen strong competition throughout his roster during the spring.
“We’ve had some good position battles going on that will continue during the offseason and into fall camp,” Roberts said. “Saturday will give everyone an opportunity to perform and earn that lead role heading into the fall.”
Following the Spring Game, former Lions will participate in Pro Day along with next-level hopefuls from Tulane and Nicholls on April 7 at 1 p.m. at the New Orleans Saints Indoor Training Facility.
The 2017 Lions will open fall practice in early August. SLU will officially open the 2017 season on Sept. 2, traveling to face in-state foe and FBS member UL Lafayette.
Southeastern opens its five-game home stand on Sept. 9 versus Bethune-Cookman. For season ticket information, contact the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466 or visit www.LionSports.net.
