School Spotlight: Hutto High School (Hutto, TX)

Hutto High School-located in Hutto, Texas-plays in the 6A Classification of Texas High School football. They are ranked as the #143 team in the state of Texas, and the #69 team in the 6A classification. The Hippos, whose colors are orange and white, went 5-5 this past year beating several top teams in the state such as Converse Judson and Copperas Cove. Hutto has sent several players into D1 college football, such as UCLA Quarterback Chase Griffin. This week, I talked to coach William Compton to discuss a couple of topics that revolve around the Hutto Hippos.

The history of the program is a very unique one in the state of Texas. Hutto started off as a rather small school competing in the 3A classification of Texas high school sports. Competing for a state championship at the 3A level in 2005, this school was known for great offenses and great quarterback play. Throughout the past decade, there was a big growth with many students flooding into the school. Going from 3A to 6A in a span of a little over the decade, it is rare to see that in the state of Texas. What is not rare to see is how great some of the quarterbacks that have come through this school, such as Chase Griffin and their quarterback right now Will Hammond. 

Talking with Coach Compton about the pillars of the program, the first thing he said was what they call F4. What F4 means is family, faith, fight and finish. The coaches talk about that every day to the players in order to ensure that they leave this program as great men in all aspects of life. F4 helps teach these kids to make sure that they finish what they started. These pillars have helped shape hard-nosed kids who have really grown throughout the past couple of years that they have been a Hutto Hippo. 

Discussing the future of Program, Coach Compton got really excited talking about how this program will be in the future. They are moving in the right direction, as it does take time getting adjusted from bumping up to 6A from 5A. All the kids are now fully adjusted to how life is at the 6A classification, and they have gotten better each year. Looking ahead to this season, this team will be led by several players who are making an impact on and off the field.

Alex Green is a 6’0″ 185 lbs wide receiver and cornerback who has offers from Western Kentucky and Arkansas State

Preston Huneycutt is a 6’4″ 255 lbs offensive tackle who is starting to pick up scholarship offers

Tristan Compton is a 6’1″ 220 lbs defensive end and long snapper who is starting to make an impact for the Hippos
