School Spotlight: Columbus High School

Columbus High School-located in Columbus, Texas-plays in the 3A classification of Texas high school football. They are ranked as the #64 team in the state, and the #3 rank in their classification of 3A. The Cardinals, whose colors are red and white, had a great year this past year going 12-2 and finishing 2nd in their district. They had a deep run in the playoffs, beating several tough 3A schools such as Diboll and C.W. Yoe. Columbus High School has sent 3 players, all brothers, into the league. Aaron, Bo, and Matt Schobel are all former NFL players who all had successful careers in the league. Matt now has led the Cardinals for the past 4 seasons along with taking on the role of athletic director for Columbus ISD.

Talking with Coach Schobel, Coach talked about how exciting it was to coach this past senior class. His first year back with the Cardinals, he has grown as a coach and watched these kids grow as well since freshman year. Many of the lessons he teaches these kids, he has seen them grow with it. Lessons such as being accountable, playing and training hard are some of the lessons he is implementing into his players now so that they can become successful in life after high school. Learning firsthand from a former NFL player definitely helps these kids out in being successful. Coach Schobel is not focused on the next level, he is focused on molding these men into being successful in life after high school. These kids are held accountable and dependable, they show up on time and he is proud of how they have conducted themselves.

Discussing the future of this program, Coach Schobel got super excited discussing the upward projection that this school is on. This is one of the toughest teams in all of 3A in the state of Texas. Last season was the fourth straight season of 10 plus wins, along with being at the top of the district. They were so close last year to making it to the state championship, and these Cardinals know it. This senior class was a huge one, but the other classes match this graduating class in size so there is such a bright program for these Cardinals.

Before letting Coach Schobel go, I asked him to highlight some of the talent he has on both sides of the ball.
