QB Fields, defense key in Destrehan’s 38-7 victory over Terrebonne

Destrehan High School extends its winning streak to 22 after it defeated Terrebonne High School 38-7 in a game filled with district title aspirations.

The Wildcats (7-0, 3-0) defense held a talented Terrebonne (5-2, 2-1) offense scoreless up until 34 seconds left in the game on an 11-yard touchdown pass that was caught by LSU commit WR Kylan Billiot.

The defense forced three turnovers (two interceptions and a fumble recovery, including a pick-six by another LSU commit, LB Kolaj Cobbins. Junior defensive back Jhase Thomas got an interception in the fourth quarter as well.

Although the offense had its struggles in parts of the contest, it was still a good performance by one of the hottest offenses in the state as of late.

Sophomore quarterback Jackson Fields completed 15 of his 22 pass attempts for 322 yards and three touchdowns. Fields did throw an interception, however, as he had a ball deflected and Terrebonne junior Z’yon Simmons dove in anticipation and managed to scoop the ball out of the air before it hit the ground.
Sophomore Destrehan WR Jabari Mack, who was one of our nominees for Player of the Week last week, also had a big night as well as he caught four balls for 139 yards and a touchdown.

In the first quarter, Destrehan had five penalties in their first two drives, including four in the first. However, after the last-second penalty, Fields found Mack for a 66-yard touchdown pass to give the Wildcats an early 7-0 lead.

When Terrebonne got the ball on the next drive, Cobbins read the bubble screen to perfection and intercepted Owen Oliver’s pass and had an easy strut into the endzone to put the Wildcats up 14-0.

On the next drive, Terrebonne had a sense of urgency as they moved the ball efficiently down the field all the way inside Destrehan’s red zone. However, Oliver fumbled the ball when he was scrambling to escape pressure and the Wildcats recovered.

When Destrehan got the ball back, the Wildcats took no time to extend their lead over the Tigers as Fields found Greg Wilfred in the back of the endzone for a 21-yard touchdown pass.

After a slow start to the third quarter, Destrehan will go up 28-0 with 4:31 left when Fields would connect with Ole Miss commit defensive back/wide receiver Anthony Robinson on a 31-yard touchdown pass. Robinson caught the ball in the flats on a bubble route and reversed back in the other direction before diving for the pylon.

Junior running back Shane Ward would score from eight yards out and Ryan Lacy would make a 29-yard field goal to give Destrehan a 38-0 lead before Billiot scored the Tigers’ only points of the day on a 11-yard touchdown catch with 34 seconds left in the game to account for the final margin.

Destrehan will host Sulphur next week while Terrebonne will have another tough district matchup with undefeated East St. John.
