BATON ROUGE – For the second consecutive week, LSU safety Jacoby Stevens has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Stevens, a sophomore from Murfreesboro, Tenn., led the Tigers with 10 tackles in Saturday’s 23-20 win over ninth-ranked Auburn. It was LSU’s third win over a Top 10 team this year.
Stevens paced an LSU defense that held Auburn to 287 total yards, including just 130 on the ground. Auburn went into the contest leading the SEC in rushing with 240 yards per game. Of Auburn’s 130 rushing yards, 111 came on two plays – a 41-yard run at the end of the first half and then a 70-yard run early in the third quarter.
After Auburn took a 13-10 lead early in the third quarter, LSU’s defense forced punts on six consecutive possession as the LSU Tigers regained the lead, extending its advantage to 23-13 during that span. For the game, LSU limited Auburn to just 5-of-18 on third-down opportunities and forced the Auburn Tigers to punt 10 times.
Stevens currently ranks second on the team with 49 tackles. He’s also added 2.5 tackles for loss, a pair of sacks and two interceptions.
The honor is the second straight for Stevens, who was also tabbed with the award following LSU’s win over Mississippi State two weeks.
