Avante Givens is a Class of 2022 Defensive Back from Belaire High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Avante also serves as the punter for the Belaire Bengals. He is 6’1” and 185 lbs and plays cornerback and safety. He is a strong tackler and has several pass breakups and an interception this year. He shows good tackling technique that will translate to the next level. Avante has received an invite to the Gridiron Football All-Star Game this December.

I’ve been lucky enough to get to know Avante at a personal level while I’ve been covering with Belaire High School in Beyond Belaire and my postgame articles. He is, of course, kind and respectful, but you’ll hear that from any adult who talks to him. In the locker room after this win Belaire had over Plaquemine, he was dancing and having a good time with his teammates. He’s a serious worker and a strong leader when he needs to be, and a fun teammate to have both on and off the field. Head Coach Byron Wade has said similar things about Avante as well in our Gridiron Football App Exclusive Coaches Corner. I’m grateful I’ve gotten to watch Avante grow and excel in the leadership role he’s earned on this Belaire team.

I asked Avante 4 questions after the game, and I can summarize his answers, but this article is different, because I personally know Avante and I’m personally going to bat for him here. This is a kid who is going to excel at the collegiate level. He’s above a 3.0 student, has good size and weight, and he excels on the field. It is hard to not fixate on how he plays when watching Belaire football. He also punts for this team, which is an odd role, but one he takes on and excels at, with 3 punts of 30+ net yards in this weeks game against Plaquemine.

When I asked Avante, he said what he needs to improve on the most is his backfield vision, but he thinks it will translate to the next level with his tackling and coverage ability. I also asked what his goal was for the season, now that Belaire is 3-1, and it was simple: “District champs.”
